Through service learning, students collaborate with their communities and apply their knowledge to improve the quality of life.

Service Learning

Service learning is central to the ethos of a student’s education and experience at an Academy. Students live this in practice through the curriculum and student life, enriched by the Aga Khan Curricular Strands.

“I can say that it was truly unique to hear every last student talk about advancing their communities rather than aspiring toward individualised accomplishments. The values and ethics expressed by the Academy students were truly inspiring.”

Mohamed Lachemi

President and Vice-Chancellor, Toronto Metropolitan University

Applying Their Learning

Service learning is a significant aspect of Academy life. Theoretical lessons, simulations and roleplays give students an insight into the theory of leadership. The Aga Khan Curricular Strands interweaving their studies – Ethics, Pluralism, Cultures (with an emphasis on Muslim civilisations), Governance and Civil Society, and Economics for Development – help them connect the theory with real-life issues. Service learning helps them apply their academic knowledge in the community.

The benefits already extend far beyond giving the students knowledge and self-belief. They partner with local organisations, and often branches of AKDN, to significantly enhance the lives of others in a sustainable way.
