Every learner matters, which is why personalised support is at the heart of excellence in education.

Student Well-being

We understand the challenges of the IB study and of living away from home, and ensure that our students have a well-rounded experience in a safe and supportive environment.

Joining the Family

We welcome students from many countries, cultures, faiths and socio-economic backgrounds. AKA Maputo offers them intellectual, social, spiritual and physical growth in a friendly, structured and ethical environment.

Students meet their mentor regularly to discuss learning skills, course selection and other academic aspects of student life, as well as interpersonal relationships. Residential students are also part of a dorm family, eating and socialising together as well as interacting with the rest of the Academy community. A faculty member, based in their residence, is responsible for their well-being and is their first point of call. We also have a counsellor on campus.

Our Health and Wellness Centre has a resident doctor and a nurse. They liaise with local specialists if needed. Transport for medical purposes is available 24/7.

Our staff ensure that the campus is secure and safe, with supervision as needed for off-campus excursions.

Feeling at Home in the Residences

“One of the best parts of being a residential student at AKA Maputo is the second family I have here. I enjoy being with the dorm parents and other students, going on weekend excursions to the mall or amusement parks, and celebrating birthdays together. It truly feels like home. I also attend the mosque every Friday with other students, which is a highlight of residence life.

When I first joined, adjusting to academic pressure and new study routines was challenging. I missed home, but with support from dorm parents and peers, I adopted a new timetable and overcame these difficulties. I realised that change can make life easier, fun and rewarding.”

Fostering a Close-Knit Community

“The residential programme at AKA Maputo fosters a strong, inclusive community. The residences encourage students and staff to build meaningful relationships while developing new skills, participating in educational activities and growing in self-independence.

As a residential parent, I support my dorm students’ health, well-being and academic progress, encourage positive behaviours, and have regular, meaningful conversations with them. I especially enjoy our weekly family dinners, which make it feel like home and provide a chance to connect with students. I also enjoy our Friday or Saturday evening activities, where we share fun moments, celebrate achievements and see a different, non-academic side of the students, helping me offer the right support and guidance.”
