Another year, another successful Model United Nations conference at the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad (AKAHMUN). 

Grade 10 student, Suzanne Lirani, achieved a Bronze Award in the UK-based Queen's Commonwealth Essay Writing Competition organised by the Royal Commonwealth Society. Her essay 'Compassionate actions; a necessity or an auxilary' focuses on whether the greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members. 

Our enormous campus has a number of spaces that have remained untouched by students which can be creatively used for different recreational activities. A few of the Student Executive Board members who remained on campus, with the help of teachers in charge, found an area less occupied by trees to set up a bonfire.

This World Mental Health Day, the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad would like to focus on student projects that have led the way during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

On Wednesday, 8 September 2021, Diploma Programme students from across the Aga Khan Academies virtually toured the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, Canada where they learned about Islamic art and artefacts from various Muslim civilisations.  

She hopes to create a play based learning environment with child centric activities in which children can learn by doing.  This approach enables children to be responsible, confident and independent.

Rainbow Girls orphanage is a home for girls from the age of 7-18 in the outskirts of Hyderabad, Telangana. Students from the Academy have run two projects over the course of the last year, ‘Project Better You’ and ‘Project Connect’. 

This year, she hopes to first provide a positive online environment, where students can feel comfortable taking risks and asking questions. She would then like her students to become strategic in their communication skills, so that they are able to explain their thinking effectively.

Eleven years ago, Aashna Lakhani joined the Academy as a new Grade 1 student.  She recently scored 55/56 in the MYP E-Assessment, making her the highest scorer in her class.

On International Women’s Day, we ask our Aga Khan Academies community how they choose to challenge gender bias and inequity.

From 28-30 May 2021, the Aga Khan Academies held its inaugural Climate and Environment Conference with over 70 students from across the Academies network in attendance, along with alumni and prominent keynote speakers and guests.

During my career I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to introduce and promote the PYP philosophy and curriculum within and outside the school community. I have worked closely with members of the staff and parent communities to help attain a deeper understanding of the PYP. This experience has helped me to further my people skills and my capacity to lead others in developing academic and methodological expertise in the classroom, and an understanding of IB, as well as the School’s mission and vision in the wider community.

She aims to create empathetic learners who use their knowledge and skills to make decisions with integrity and honesty, actively seeking opportunities to make the world a happy place for a larger community.

Fuelled by his enthusiasm for technology and a recent growing interest in robotics, Ziyan Parbatani in grade 10 decided to make an Animatronic Robotic Arm for his Personal Project.

Recently awarded a full scholarship at Northwestern University in Qatar, Saidvalieva Mizhgona from Tajikistan is ready to graduate from the Academy with the Class of 2021!  Mizhgona joined the Academy six years ago from Tajikistan.

Recently awarded a full scholarship at Georgetown University in Qatar, Jamolbi Khushqadamova from Tajikistan is ready to graduate from the Academy with the Class of 2021!  Jamolbi joined the Academy six years ago from Tajikistan.  

Established in 2017, the Aga Khan Academy (AKA) Alumni Network initially began with the intention of keeping alumni connected with each other after graduating from their respective Academy. At the Academy, for the second consecutive year we have extended partnership with AKDN wide network, IT sector, Entrepreneurship, Private Firms and other grass-root level NGOs. As a result, this year we have successfully placed 50 students of both long- term and short- term internships in various organisations and institutions.

Aashna’s Personal project focuses on the importance of paper recycling.  Using online Zoom workshops she taught people how they can recycle paper at home!

DP1 students study some thought-provoking texts as part of their English course! These include Amartya Sen’s prose and Arthur Miller’s play, Death of a Salesman. 

Inspired by the writings of the Sufi poet, Rumi,  Nasreen created a book to raise awareness about Sufism.  

PYP students have been busy conducting surveys and interacting with guest speakers to understand perspectives to the local and global issues they are researching. 

Recently awarded a full scholarship at Tufts University, Bahar Abbassi from Afghanistan is ready to graduate from the Academy with the Class of 2021!  Bahar joined the Academy six years ago from Afghanistan.

Through the creation of this magazine for their CAS project, six students hoped to take the first step in creating a space that is conducive to intellectual discourse among students.  A magazine that does not just report, but tears down ambiguity, challenges power, and acknowledges bias. One that engages with that you already know, but pushes you to know more. 

Amongst 300 participants, Grade 9 student Shashini Bommala from the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad was recognised as the best Junior CEO through an international entrepreneurial course.

Music Verandah is a virtual music platform that was launched by a DP1 student in 2020. 

 Sudha Badugu in Diploma Programme won the Gold Award for the British - Queen's Commonwealth Essay Writing Competition organised by the Royal Commonwealth Society. 

In their final year of the Primary Years Programme, she hopes to develop her students into independent and responsible learners, who will celebrate their journey through the Primary Years Programme Exhibition process.

The groundwork of the PYP Exhibition has begun. Students were introduced to the PYP exhibition by the PYP Coordinator, Mr. Abhimanyu, who walked the students through the different phases. 

After months of collaboration within the AKDN community, especially between the Aga Khan Education Board India (AKEBI) and the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad, we are delighted to announce that six students from Saurashtra have been selected for admission into Grade 7 at the Academy. 

"I believe its important to make the most of the time we have, and see the positive side of the darkness of the obstacle. As students, who are called the change makers and leaders of tomorrow, we have been given the privilege of continuing our learning through our digital devices.”

The MLT Club presented on 24th September 2020 a session to commemorate The International Day of Peace (21st September 20).

I hope to be able to lead the pedagogy in alignment with His Highness the Aga Khan’s humanistic goals and vision and contribute to planting seeds of universal human values that are best exemplified through the AKA strands and the AKA Learner Profile. Being the son of an Army officer who has served in different parts of India and abroad has also helped shape my thought process, coupled with experience in Physical Education and Leadership'. 

At the Modern Literature Club, they deconstruct and analyse translated texts to develop an appreciation for how language constructs meaning and illustrates the human condition. 

I believe that teachers are in contact with the most important people on the planet; youth who are future leaders and influencers. Therefore, I would like to use the stories, poems and plays and texts we study in class to become life-long lessons in inspiration for my students.

Culture is different for everyone from different corners of the world because everyone comes from different walks of life and the paths they choose are heavily varied. Every human being has the choice to adopt a culture of their choice, it is never restricted to their place of birth, it is simply a feeling of patriotism and oneness that urges one to adopt the culture of their own birthplace. At the Academy, we believe in diversity, we experience it and we thrive in it, not just because it is expected of us, but because once we begin to experience what diversity looks like, there’s no other culture we’d rather be part of.

Garv Joshi (grade 8) produced his own trap music (a branch of hip-hop music) and started making his own beats. He then sold the beats and used the money he earned to buy items needed to make a COVID-19 kits. 

On Thursday 28th May the Junior School held a celebration of the Pedagogy of Play (POP) academic research undertaken by all its faculty members. 

The squash tournament was hosted by a group of three students - Atiya Panjwani, Aafreen Prasla and Rehaan Khimani - as a part of their Community, Action and Service project over the weekend of 2nd - 3rd March 2019. 

Mr Malik Kotadia, Director of External Affairs, Aga Khan Academies, was invited as the Chief Guest for the Model United Nations (MUN) event held on 31 October at Shadan Institute of Medical Sciences.

Children's Day is celebrated on 14th November every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawarharlal Nehru, who firmly believed that children are the future of the nation. Students were up for some fun and treats as the Junior School celebrated this day with great enthusiasm and vigour in the Junior School library.

Residential students of the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad celebrated diversity and pluralism by bringing together some rich cultures from around the world into a single platform. The Grand Cultural Fest took place on Saturday, 9th November at the Academy's amphitheatre.

The Academy hosted its first inter-school Theory of Knowledge (ToK) conference on Friday, October 25th in the AB basement. The theme of the conference was 'the motif of power'. Two schools, Indus International School and Johnson Grammar School from Hyderabad had also participated in the conference.

Iqra Amlani and Ananya Shah were selected by the International Baccalaureate (IB) as student ambassadors to present papers at DIDAC India Exhibition 2019 in Bangalore on 25th September 2019.

Two Academy teams consisting of 20 students attended the national chapter of the FIRST Lego League robotics competition in Bangalore on the weekend of 23-24th February 2019. One of them came away with an award. 

International School Library Week was celebrated from Monday, 21st October 2019 to Friday, 25th October 2019. Students from the Academy's Junior and Senior Schools participated in several global projects and activities to articulate the importance of libraries and to create a community of avid readers.

Talent Buzz, an annual talent show organised by the Academy's residential students was held on Thursday 29th September at the Commons. There were about 30 incredible performances put together by talented students from Junior and Senior Schools.

Around 40 students from the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad organised a flash mob on Tuesday, 2nd October 2019 at Sarath City Capital Mall at Kondapur, Hyderabad. The flash mob aimed to raise awareness about the current climate change situation.

The Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad Model United Nations (AKAHMUN) which is a simulation of the UN was held from Saturday 21st September to Monday 23rd September 2019. The event saw active participation from MYP and DP students. 

The Academy’s Junior School commemorated the International Day of Peace with a week-full of meaningful activities, starting from Monday 16 September to Friday 20 September. 

Students studying the IB Diploma Programme at the Academy have been regularly volunteering to spend some quality time on various projects that enable service-based learning. Over the last few days, around 28 students of DP 1 had planted more than 300 different varieties of organic vegetables and flowers on the Academy campus!

Over 65 students undergoing Diploma Programme at the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad participated in the summer service internship programme held between 10th June and 5th July 2019.

Rehana Savani graduated in May this year and visited the Academy this week. Rehana, who is a proud recipient of the Global Citizen Award from the University of Alberta, begins her studies in Economics in September.  Dr Long had a chance to ask her a few questions during her visit.

The Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad embarked on a new academic year 2019-20 with one-week In-Service Education Training (INSET) programme held primarily for all Academy faculty and staff from 29 July to 02 August 2019. 

Since joining the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad at the beginning of this academic year, resident Academy Counsellor Dr Isabelle has been working alongside our medical faculty in the Wellness Centre to ensure that all members of our community have access to the health services they need.

Eight students won first place for their performance of their original skit "Women" at this year’s BENFEST, held on Saturday 2nd February 2019 at Little Flowers High School. 

2019 marked the year of the 1000th graduate from the Aga Khan Academies network. This year, we graduated 159 students from the Academies in Mombasa and Hyderabad. For students who graduated from the Academy in May, the publication of IB results marks the formal end to their Academy education.  

Around 150 students from the Junior School participated in their annual music concert held on Friday, 17th May 2019. The concert featured performances in four different languages highlighting the techniques researched and adapted by students in creating music that took the audience by surprise. 

Mombasa teachers Lucy Mwandawiro and Dorcas Kisilu visited the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad for two weeks as part of the teacher exchange programme. Read about their visit and the advantages the exchange gives to teachers and the Academies.

On Friday 24th May approximately 60 students and six faculty from the Academy participated in demonstrations against government inaction towards the climate crisis as part of the global Fridays for Future movement.

Over 70 theatre students from the Academy Senior School performed their original play, 'Sleeping Cinderella Aur Ek Chor Ki Family' at the Ravindra Bharathi Auditorium on Saturday 18th May 2019.

Rising grade 12 students Iliyan Gowlani and Ananya Shah were elected as student representative council presidents this year.

74 students of the Class of 2019 concluded their International Baccalaureate journey at the Academy with a formal evening ceremony on Saturday 25th May, joining a growing legacy of global young leaders, driven by the Academy’s unique curriculum and approach to education.

The festival consisted of a series of plays initiated by students of grade 8 for students in Junior School, based on folk stories for children from around the world.

Students of grade 8 were engaged in an integrated activity of English and Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) in the form of a 'Peace Project' on Wednesday, 30th October 2019. The event was attended by Academy teachers and young minds of grade 5.

In an outstanding display, several Academy players and teams bagged honours at the Hyderabad School Football League, including a girls' U15 runner up award.

In what was a weekend full of scientific and technological exploration, excitement and learning, grade 11 students attended a genetics workshop in February 2019. 

A student-driven event, the 2019 TEDx conference featured 10 unique talks and a handful of stellar performances delivered by Academy students, staff and external speakers.

The Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad Junior School opened its Loose Parts Playground for children to enjoy an unconventional play experience.

MYP students held an assembly on Monday 22nd April to observe Earth Day. Our young learners organised performance art pieces and other installations around campus to spark discussion and spread awareness about the impact of human activity on the environment,

Five women graduated from the Aga Khan Academies’ TPP during an evening ceremony on Tuesday 12th March 2019. The TPP, a multi-phase programme, is designed to prepare highly promising, locally trained teachers with the knowledge and skills to effectively deliver the International Baccalaureate curriculum.

AKA Hyderabad was conferred the Brainfeed School Excellence Award 2019 in various categories. Junior School Principal Sreelatha Kumar received the award at Brainfeed Magazine’s 6th national conference on Thursday 31st January at Hotel Avasa in Hyderabad city.

260 students representing seven IB PYP schools from Hyderabad took part in the 8th network athletics meet on Thursday 24th and Friday 25th January 2019 at the Academy.

In October 2018, AKA Hyderabad signed an MoU with the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society for joint initiatives on teacher training and recruiting gifted students for scholarship opportunities.

The second edition of the inter-school MUN conference took place between 8-10 December 2018, aimed at bringing together students from various schools in Hyderabad to identify, discuss and debate on critical global issues that affect all of us.

The two month-long inaugural Aga Khan Academies exchange programme came to a close just before the semester ended in December 2018, allowing for returning students to reflect, relive and readjust.

The Academy's annual athletics meet for Senior and Junior Schools were held on Wednesday 12th, and Thursday 13th December 2018, respectively.

Grade 7K’s English unit on poetry came to a close with the students writing poems centered on the theme of celebration, and presenting them to the grade 3s.

15 students from Junior and Senior School were selected to showcase innovative designs at the Maker Faire international festival on Saturday 10th - Sunday 11th November 2018 at Hitex Exhibition Centre, Madhapur.

20 students from grades 6-8 participated in the Junior MUN conference held between 2nd – 4th November 2018 at CHIREC International School in Hyderabad.

Residential students from grades 6-9 took part in an information session by Mr. David Raj, the State Programme Manager, Child Protection Unit, UNICEF, on puberty, adolescence and cyber safety on Friday 7th December 2018.

URS AsiaOne Magazine felicitated the Academy at a ceremony in Mumbai on Monday 10th September 2018, for its contribution to India's economy in the country's 71st year of independence. 

On 29 April 2018, the Province of Ontario and the Aga Khan Academies network of schools formally extended their partnership on mutually beneficial education initiatives.

Two exhibits on ancient civilisations and on geometry were designed and presented by Academy students on 5th April. The exhibits fostered creativity, teamwork and leadership.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) has published an interview with His Highness the Aga Khan in a special commemorative edition of IB World magazine, celebrating the IB's 50th anniversary.

36 students from grades 5 – 12 participated in the Glendale Aquatic Open Challenge on 24th August 2018. 

An AKA Hyderabad drama troupe performed Charandhas Chor and finished second in a Hyderabad theatre competition, winning a trophy and prize money.

38 students from the current grade 12 cohort spent a month during their summer vacation working at over 15 non-profits in India, Ghana, Bangladesh and Canada, as part of the Academy's summer service internship programme.

Over the last month, Diploma Programme students, Elya Djaffar, Nabil Patel and Rudra Aryan have been working hard at shaping their business ideas at the Ryerson DMZ Basecamp summer programme in Toronto.

Junior School held its first Super Saturday of the academic year on 11th August with team building games for PYP students and sessions for PYP parents.

16 grade 9 students from AKA Hyderabad will exchange places with counterparts in AKA Mombasa through an inaugural international exchange programme from October - December 2018.

Three Diploma Programme students and a faculty member are currently attending the Ryerson DMZ Basecamp summer programme, an intensive six-week programme for young entrepreneurs at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada.

At the International Career and College Counselling conference in Delhi, the AKA Hyderabad counsellor was recognised for her outstanding performance.

Grade 8 students launched Reading Club with an event on 1st April, to encourage a widespread reading culture at the Academy.

20 MYP & DP students participated in the Run 4 Cause fundraiser for Laktatanda village. Students used the opportunity to give back to the community and take a step toward a healthy lifestyle.

17 IB Diploma Programme visual arts students took part in a junk sculpture workshop with Mr. Shivarama Chary, a renowned visual artist/sculptor living and working in Hyderabad, over the weekend of 27-28 January. 

Grade 7 students had a fun summative task for their interdisciplinary unit on the silk road, involving skits and musical compositions that brought alive significant individuals and themes linked to the main subject. 

The Class of 2018 was celebrated at the Academy's fifth graduation ceremony on Saturday 19th May 2018. 

130 students across grades 6, 8 and 11 participated in the 3rd annual Global Day of Design on 4th May, learning innovative ways of resolving problems.

The annual Junior School Music Concert was held on 11th May at the Commons. This year saw many firsts, and great performances overall. 

Junior School students held Entrepreneurship Day on 26th April. The event was a success and a great learning experience for grade 3. 

Advait Surana and Aman Nurani of grade 12 were awarded IE University’s Venture Lab award for the best ‘junior business plan’ and won Rs.50,000 in prize money, as well as a scholarship to study any programme of their choice from IE University, Spain.

Senior School students organised an event during assembly to show their gratitude to non-teaching support staff on Monday 29th October 2018.

Close to 800 students from 17 Hyderabad schools participated in football, basketball and cricket competitions at the Academy on 28-29 September. 

The Academy's university counselling department held group sessions for all on the university search process during the week of 26th February - 2nd March.

The Academy held a day-long robotics workshop and tournament for 48 grade 6 students from seven nearby government schools on Saturday, 24th February.

Junior School students dressed up as their favourite characters and met with a local author to celebrate book day on Thursday, 1st March.

37 students and faculty members ran the Freedom Hyderabad 10k and 5k runs on Sunday 25th November to promote enthusiasm for health and fitness in the city.

19 Academy drama students from grades 9-11 participated in a theatre festival at Oakridge International School on Wednesday 29th August.

A professional development workshop was conducted by Australian Council for Educational Research on 25th March on the topic of differentiation.

Eight Academy students from grades 8-10 participated at the International School of Hyderabad Model United Nations on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th January at the Microsoft Campus in Gachibowli. 

The Academy’s Collaborative Discussion Forum extends modern teaching methods to government and other not-for-profit schools, both locally and regionally.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the District of Mahbubnagar and the Centre for Digital Financial Inclusion (CDFI) to institute a new digital inclusion pilot in 45 anganwadi centres in Mahbubnagar District. 

Academy students visited a senior citizens' home and a boys' orphanage as part of the CAS program, coming away with an understanding of issues facing both these communities, and an eagerness to tackle them.

The Academy's Entrepreneurship Club hosted their second successful event on 4th February. The festivities were part of a CAS project to raise money for future service efforts and also to give students organising and management exposure.

60 Academy grade 12 students shared their summer internship experiences with their IB Diploma colleagues and Senior School faculty on Saturday, 19th August.

The annual student-run Academy Talent Buzz took place on Saturday 8th April in the Commons, captivating their audience with exceptional song, instrumental, dance and drama performances.
