Mastering the Art of Cooking
Qamili Dave is a passionate culinary arts professional from Mombasa, Kenya and a Class of 2017 alumna of AKA Mombasa. Her time at the Academy was an enriching experience that helped shape her confidence and future aspirations. The open and trusting environment encouraged her to speak up, ask questions and believe in her abilities.
One of her proudest accomplishments was the opportunity to intern at the Serena Beach Hotel in Mombasa through the Academy’s University Counselling Department. This experience helped her confirm her desire to pursue a career in culinary arts.
“Although I knew I loved to cook, I wasn’t sure it was the right profession for me,” she said. “During my internship, I realised I was on the right path.”
Reflecting on her journey, Qamili encourages current students to appreciate their teachers and take advantage of internship opportunities offered by the Academy.

We are wholly merit-based. We select exceptional students with the intellect, integrity and drive to engage with the world around them and strive to improve it. We offer financial assistance to those in need and provide a safe and stimulating setting for children from all backgrounds to live and learn together.
“Our goal, then, is not to provide special education for a privileged elite – but rather to open the doors of opportunity to students from a broader array of backgrounds. Our goal is to provide a truly exceptional education for truly exceptional students.”

From Tajikistan to Mombasa
“I look back at my childhood in Tajikistan, when I had to hike more than six kilometres through the mountains during frosty winters to reach school. At the age of 12, my life changed when I was accepted to AKA Mombasa with full financial aid and travelled thousands of miles from home. I was given the opportunity to shape my character and thinking within the IB curriculum.
The Academy helped me become more self-aware, empathetic, organised and balanced. It strengthened my goal of returning to Tajikistan to contribute to its development and equipped me with skills that guide my growth.
I studied architectural studies at the University of Toronto as a recipient of the Ontario Tuition Waiver through the Academy’s University Counselling Department. I am determined to become an architect who will help transform the urban landscape of Badakhshan.”

We help our students grow into ethical, compassionate and knowledgeable leaders, ready for a lifetime of working with diverse global teams in a rapidly changing environment.
Approach to Pluralism
“My first impression of the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa was its impressive campus and modern facilities, from the classrooms to the swimming pool and amphitheatre. Both of my children have been enrolled at the Academy since Grade 1, and we have always found the Academy well-managed and welcoming. Having been in the Parent Teacher Association, we have also seen how responsive the school is to parents’ concerns.
We chose the Academy for its IB curriculum and have seen how it nurtures well-rounded, independent students ready for a changing world. What stood out most was its commitment to pluralism and inclusion. Unlike other schools, there is no favouritism and all students are treated equally. Choosing AKA Mombasa was the right decision for our family.”

Transformative Journey
“Being a student at AKA Mombasa has been a truly transformative experience. I have had countless opportunities to grow both academically and personally. The rigorous academic programme has taught me to apply knowledge beyond textbooks to real-world challenges. Beyond the classroom, the school’s holistic approach has inspired me to explore service, creativity and global citizenship, broadening my perspective. A highlight of my time here has been serving as Tuckshop CEO, which taught me leadership, collaboration and accountability.
The Academy has shaped me into a confident, independent and well-rounded individual. It has given me the skills, experiences and mindset to face the future with purpose and compassion.”
