A holistic education includes plenty of time for sports and physical activity. At the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa, students enjoy dynamic sports sessions in exceptional facilities, promoting teamwork, fitness and fun.
Explore Sports at AKA Mombasa
Students have the chance to try many sports, both competitive and non-competitive. They might train in athletics, learn dance or a martial art or join a sports team. In later years they are able to focus on developing expertise in a few areas, taking on leadership and coaching responsibilities.
AKA Mombasa’s campus features swimming and diving pools, grass and Astroturf sports fields, a gymnasium, dance studio, and facilities for cricket, tennis, squash, badminton, volleyball, basketball and netball.
Sports Day takes place every year for the Junior School and Senior School.
AKA Mombasa’s competitive swimming team regularly wins awards at CANA.
The astroturf is used for several sports, including cricket.
Students participate in a range of track and field activities.
Students can play football on the astroturf with their friends after school.
The tennis and squash courts have viewing facilities for parents and spectators.

“I joined AKA Mombasa in 2017, and a large part of my decision to join involved swimming. I had full confidence that I could continue my studies and continue to train in swimming. The pool, gym and multi-purpose hall helped me build strength and improve my technique, while living on campus made training easier and gave me time to enjoy sunrises and sunsets.
Being part of the team created strong bonds and great memories at competitions. We also got to learn from each other and create great memories at competitions. With expert coaching and world-class facilities, I was selected to represent Kenya in the East African Secondary School Games and captained Team Kenya at the CANA Zone 3 Championships, winning six medals. It was a humbling and fulfilling experience, and I learnt a lot from it.”

My Basketball Family
“If someone told me I would be a part of AKA Mombasa’s basketball team four years ago, I would have laughed. Reflecting on that statement now, I think that my life would feel sort of incomplete without basketball in it.
Growing up as a competitive swimmer, the shift to basketball was not easy. Every practice forced me to relearn myself as an athlete and as a person. Fortunately, I have supportive coaches and teammates who keep pushing me to reach the potential they see in me. I am beyond lucky to be a part of a team that makes me feel like I am a part of a family on and off the basketball court.
Basketball has also enabled me to see the importance of relationships, communication and strategy. I now find it easier to think on my feet and plan and communicate more effectively, which in turn has helped me to become well-rounded in all aspects of my life.”

Defending champions AKA Mombasa reign on at County basketball games
The Academy’s girls’ and boys’ basketball teams defended their titles at the Mombasa County basketball games in March 2020. Both teams recorded decisive wins throughout the tournament, including strong victories in the finals at Shimo La Tewa.

AKA Mombasa Mombasa held its annual inter-house sports day, bringing students from the Junior School and Senior School together with parents, teachers and staff. Students competed in track, field and swimming events, including the Junior School’s first-ever synchronised swimming.
