Student Well-being
We understand the challenges of IB study and of living away from home, and ensure that our students have a well-rounded experience in a safe and supportive environment.
Joining the Family
We welcome students from many countries, cultures, faiths and socio-economic backgrounds. AKA Mombasa offers them intellectual, social, spiritual and physical growth in a friendly, structured and ethical environment.
Students meet their mentor regularly to discuss learning skills, course selection and other academic aspects of student life, as well as interpersonal relationships. Residential students are also part of a dorm family, eating and socialising together as well as interacting with the rest of the Academy community. A faculty member, based in their residence, is responsible for their well-being and is their first point of call. We also have a counsellor on campus.
Our Health and Wellness Centre has four in-house nurses (two of whom live on campus), and one on-site doctor. They liaise with local specialists as needed. Transport for medical purposes is available 24/7.
Our staff ensure that the campus is secure and safe, with supervision as needed for off-campus excursions.
Well-being Through Connection
"Being a residential parent at AKA Mombasa was my favourite thing to do during my time there. There are times throughout the experience where I felt more like an older sister to the students by providing them advice on school-related and non-school-related things, consoling them when they missed home, and just chatting about what was going on in our lives.
When I am assigned for duty on the weekends, I feel the most connected to the students. We spend some time off-campus at the movie theatre, on a hiking trail or at the beach, but also on-campus when I am supervising the pool area or basketball court during our sports hour. I will also forever cherish the intimate moments I had with the residential students, especially lying outside on the grass in front of the residences on the weekends before dinner time with a few students.”

Thriving Together
At our school, well-being is woven into the fabric of everyday life. We believe that when students feel safe, supported and empowered, they are best placed to learn, grow and thrive. Teachers play a vital role, developing strategies through training to create safe, supportive and engaging classrooms. Students shape well-being initiatives, bring forward ideas and foster a culture where feedback is valued. Well-being is part of who we are as a school.
